Excellent performances all round. Great cast. Interesting subject matter. However, it feels like the film is designed for the people holding the purse strings in the education system. "More funding please"
Unlike the many similar 'teacher tries to save a group of wayward kids' films. This is squarely from the teacher's point of view, particularly Adrien Brody's character, following his daily struggles inside and outside school life.
At times it is slow, focuses on the bleak and apparently unwinnable battle the teachers face. And is no more positive in it's hopes for the future of the students. All of this is quite deliberate but tiring.
At times the plinky plonky sad piano and slow motion is a little over the top.
I wouldn't recommend it to a friend.
I admire it's attempt more than it's execution. 6.7 stars.

This film was beyond great. I firmly believe that not a known award is equal to the film's greatness. These characters seemed to be made by the hardest stone. So deep, emotional and strong. I could see them from my screen and right away, I was able to feel them, to hear them in real life. Their pain, misery, the feeling of lack of security, their crying, their laugh...Got into my soul. That's the main reason which the movie was made: to come into you. And it has succeeded as hell. It didn't show life at its best, neither life at its worst; only life as it is. We didn't see our characters actually heal, we didn't see them being truly happy. We saw their improvement, how the got an actual help. Eventually, that's life. To finish your time helping yourself, helping others. this is the way to true happiness. And, as the movie says, for all of this you need courage, bravery, strong attitude. Letting down is sure easily than trying hard to be better. Yes, true. But that is something that gets you into spiritual trouble. Thus, the main character was the key to give, not solutions to others problems, but to give them inspiration. There was a great accomplishment in that.Camera was awesome, as so editing. The colors were as I best like them. Music fitted nice. 10/10. Detached gave me chills.

This is a very depressing film about a teacher that tries to make a little difference although he realizes he is only a tiny pawn against a failing system. Not just the educational system but the entire world that is slowly, but steadily drifting into a failing society for most.No matter how depressing it is – and it is, in some ways it even reminded me of Pink Floyd's The Wall – this film is impressive and worth the time to watch. Is it one of those artsy pretentious films? Not at all. As someone in his review said (thank you bobmichigan1): "Terrence Malick should take a look at this movie to understand how art films are supposed to be made not just images reflecting on a screen but real emotions included". I feel bobmichigan1 was spot on there! The cast was excellent as well. But there should be a special mention for Adrian Brody. Not an easy part but so extremely well delivered!

... but this movie kept me thinking for hours afterward. It's one of those rare moments when a movie's message really gets to you. Everyone is lonely in some way and this fact can be harsh, but soothing at the same time. To me, being a teacher, this movie was very inspirational and contained great morals to over think. If you are one of those prospects, looking for good reviews here on IMDb: don't hesitate: watch this movie now.Outstanding performances of Brody and Sami Gayle, and a well chosen cast in general.
