chaswe-28402 Hard to say why this movie is rated so low on this site. In some ways I agree with the critics, but overall I found it to be entertaining, and even funny in parts. I certainly didn't see anything wrong with the performance of Madonna, or any of the others. Laurie Metcalf was great. Perhaps the amnesia plot device was a little lame for hanging the entire narrative on. The production had more of an air of a play for television than a full-scale feature film. Memorable title, but I admit to having forgotten the story by the time I gave it a second look. Remembered and appreciated the Jimmy Presley masonic dollar jacket, however.
atlasmb A case of amnesia, complicated by mistaken identity, is what drives this quirky, lovable comedy. But it is more than a comedy. It morphs into a love story and a tale of self-discovery."Desperately Seeking Susan" is a clever, quirky film that delights at every turn. Madonna, in her first significant film role, is the eponymous Susan--a wild woman unrestrained by conventions or predictability. Rosanna Arquette plays Roberta, the amnesiac who invents herself using obscure clues in a hatbox as she attempts to discover her true identity. Both women are terrific.Quirkiness is what drives this film--the story, the dialogue, the casting, the wardrobe, the scenery. Shot in and around New York City, much of the action takes place in neon nightclubs and graffiti-filled alleyways, feeling like it is in the same neighborhood as Mushnick's Flower Shop. Also, look for the snippets of a magic act, a ventriloquist act and a stand-up routine.Director Susan Seidelman deserves credit for this conglomeration of playness and kitsch, and so do the designers whose attention to detail is apparent in every frame.
Ian (Flash Review)A bored housewife, for some reason still foggy to me, followed a frequent personal ad in the paper seeking to find out who Susan is. Weak spark for the plot. So during the scene where she sees Susan, she acquires the jacket and falls down, bangs her head and gets amnesia. Because of this jacket, people think she is Susan. Confusing plot points occur, Madonna leads a wild existence, this other gal falls in love 'as Susan' while being married and all story lines collide at the end without a good payoff. One bright spot was the person in charge of lighting did a nice and subtle job of making grimy New York city look interestingly colorful in the 80's. Check another big title 80's film off the list…eye roll.
lobianco These three actors who appear briefly but prominently in Desperately Seeking Susan also appear in lead roles in Spike Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING: John Turtorro who plays the Magic Club MC in DSS also stars as DINO in Do the Right Thing . Richard Edson plays Dino's brother Vito in Do The Right Thing appears as "man with newspapers" in DSS. Then you have Giancarlo Esposito who played the unforgettable"Buggin Out" in Do The Right Thing. The patron who points out that there are no pictures of black celebrities on the wall in the pizza parlor where brothers Dino and Vito work. Giancarlo is the third actor from Do The Right Thing to also to appear in Desperately Seeking Susan. He plays the street vendor who attempts to sell the lead actress a hat. Another interesting bit of trivia in Desperately Seeking Susan is that Richard Edson's co-hort in "Stranger Than Paradise" John Lurie also has a bit part in the film.
