martin-1903 I remember feeling rather shocked to discover that members of thepublic used to identify with the characters in soap operas to such apeculiar degree that they would send them birthday cards or death threats. A member of the cast of 'el dorado' the admittedly awful (but surely not uniquely so) British soap opera was openly beaten in the street for participating in this drama. If only people would attack builders who construct ugly shopping centres, or other public workers who make shoddy jobs we have to endure the sight of. anyway, i digress. one would be led to fantasise from the primary comment displayed here that the person concerned suffers from the same malign syndrome which basically boils down to 'the paradox of the audience member' the silliness of these comments cannot go unchallenged as they are substantially inaccurate as well as crude. I feel that, interestingly, the director is the one who draws the most comment here, as the author of this review quickly runs out of authentic comments to make about the film in question. it just so happens that most of the hundreds and hundreds of anodine generic films which get made around the world week in and week out pass without much comment of any note. They satisfy the public's hunger for tepidity. Dead daughters is a film which has provoked a great deal of reaction. The allusions which the author of the review sites are wildly inaccurate, he is projecting. Dead daughters is the independent expression of an intelligent mind. The reason why it arouses controversy is rather mystifying - i recently witnessed a person refusing to sit on the flag of england - she believed it had some sacrosanct capacity to hex her if she desecrated it. She was traduced by the beleifs associated with that image. I urge people to try and see things for what they are (a lump of coloured nylon in the case of the flag) and not to get the willing suspension of disbelief (or lack of it) mixed up with the mental illness of delusion. Surely that is one of the pertinent themes of dead daughters. And one which the reviewer (obeying the critical voice inside himself) failed to articulate their recognition of. although clearly, something got them going. something rooted in a sad and irreparable state of ignorance i fear. but never mind - it's not everyone who gets the joke. just ask ernie bishop.
sawo-1 At the beginning the movie was very promising, but the director did awful work. The camera is just shaking randomly without any specific direction. At the scenes where most of the characters get killed, you simply cant see anything except random fast moving frames. As others before me already said, the movie is not the typical horror flick, but its still bad.The motive of the girls is pretty simple as in other Japanse horror movies, but they are way way ahead. This movie can be done with $500 budget by group of students and they will probably can make it even better especially if they use normal camera angles.//spoiler There was scene where the last alive sister says that she can feel them when they are around and then the director shows underwater camera just 2m away pointed at her that probably should make you think that the sisters are watching her.So why she didn't felt them when they was 2m away?!?! //spoilerAll in all i expected something better than most of the latest horror movies from Hollywood, but all i got was poor scripted and amateur filmed movie. The director tried to cover his disability with random "effects" like shaky camera and very close-up scenes with the dead bodies of the victims, but he failed and even forgot to follow the script at some moments.I have no problems watching very long movies with almost no action like Rose Red or Stalker (which my friends found extremely boring) but i was unable to watch this movie from the beginning to the end.It was simply too boring and annoying. At the middle i just stopped it and the only thing that made me to watch it to the end was the desire to write comment here how bad it really is.Don't waste your time!To the people who rate this movie 10/10: try to think before you rate there is simply no way that this movie can get 10/10
mipt641 Well done camera work - sometimes a bit shaky but for those who watched Lars von Triers movies this is nothing :). Beautiful film. The plot is typical for horror genre, but with a Russian (Dostoevsky type) twist - the monsters don't kill "just because" but for not being "good" - giving you a chance to think about what is good and bad. Sometimes it's not so obvious. Acting could be better but generally it is a well done entertaining movie with good suspense. For reasons not clear, some Russian reviewers got so disgusted with the movie (see the 'valektburg' comment) that I honestly thought it must be personal. The film didn't deserve this kind of reviews.
valkorn This ain't you typical horror flick, although director Pavel Ruminov makes you think the opposite for the first ten minutes or so. It soon gets obvious that this film is much more sophisticated and thought-provoking than The Ring and other Japanese horror remakes/originals. The whole "ghosts of drowned girls seeking revenge on humankind" premise serves as a backdrop to an eclectic thriller that's rich in social satire, extremely dense in visual detail and is way closer to an existential drama than any other "horror" movie out there. Basically it appeared to be sort of a shock therapy for the Russian audiences. Most of the moviegoers expected to see another quality adaptation of an old Japanese concept, but instead were bombarded with a chain of disturbing and highly involving events that made the viewing experience very personal, intimate, and, it appears, in many cases quite unpleasant. As for me, I had no problems with this film whatsoever, probably because I was already familiar with Ruminov's style of movie-making and actually expected much more than a typical ghost movie.
