The story was interesting and captivates you for a while, particularly if you like alien abduction stories, but somewhere in the middle it just drops and so does your interest. Could of been so much better. But not a bad effort.

I had to take this movie for what it truly is - a family concocts an elaborate alien abduction story to explain why their teenage son is missing. Maybe he was growing up too fast, not listening to his parents anymore, indulging in girls and drugs against the prudish wishes of his parents, and he just had to go. The poor kid is probably buried in a grave somewhere deep in the woods. Yeah. The father should definitely have a lot of dirt in his fingernails. However, on the premise that this film was nothing more than an implausible tale about an alien abduction, the movie works. You feel bad for the hardships the family is going through, and the fact that the acting is spot-on in this movie made their angst all the more palpable. They probably really were torn apart and it was no help that their teenage son was ultra rebellious. Taken as a real account of an alien abduction, however, I would've given it a much lower rating, like 2 or 3. I do recommend the flick, if for nothing else, to get into the sick minds of scheming people.

Dark Skies could easily fall into dime store red Box or cable TV quick pick, but it actually deserves more credit. With a good supporting cast, a few good jump scares and some creepy scenes it certainly delivers on the chill factor. The plot is relatively typical where we have your average Middle class family being terrorized by strange occurrences that are left unexplained until a shocking realization occurs while the mother, Keri Russell, goes surfing on the internet for clues to the odd circumstances that befall upon them. Here they meet a an Extra-Terrestrial consultant who is strange, but proves informative and helpful to the Barret family. Apparently, this is a phenomenon that has been trending for some decades where people end up missing over alien abduction. The plot offers more than just your usual TV thriller of Alien horrors. It also incorporates the complexity of family dysfunction and marital strife which seems exacerbated mainly by the extra-terr4estial nuisance. I found the suspense to be worthwhile. There are some flaws with a few scenes that are directed at poor decisions made by characters. But sometimes a thriller has to be excused of such petty logic. The alien Grays were a bit disappointing and not as gruesome or ominous as I'd hope they would be. But Dark skies benefits from good character development, moody and dreamlike sequences and overall feeling of powerlessness. It's worth the watch.

I'm not a regular partaker of horror/thriller movies but picked this one up because it had some good actors who's works I've enjoyed in the past. The actors don't disappoint, nor does the storyline or directing. I see many throwing down on it because it apparently doesn't match or out-do expectations built from past movies. But un-encumbered by this I found it quite an engaging ride. Keri Russell is excellent as normal. And young Dakota Goyo continues to show an acting talent beyond his years. The one look he throws the camera near the end is haunting. And I would differ with those who say it's not a true horror flick. They must not have noticed the various 60's wall coverings in the Barret home. The scariest thing I've seen in nigh 40 years!
