cricketbat Cursed is a horror movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's not very scary and it has some pretty ridiculous moments, but, overall, I thought it was entertaining. What can I say? I like werewolves.
Scott LeBrun Christina Ricci and Jesse Eisenberg are siblings Ellie and Jimmy. She's a producer for Craig Kilborns' talk show, he's a high school student. One night, after a nasty traffic accident on Mulholland Drive, they witness one of the other victims being mauled by something that just might be a werewolf. When they too get bitten, it eventually becomes clear that they *have* changed, and not for the better. They then have to spend the rest of their time figuring out how to break the "curse" and return to being normal humans again. For a production that was pretty troubled, I guess it's a miracle that it's passably entertaining to any degree. Wes Cravens' direction is energetic, but Kevin Williamson this time writes a script that is largely uninspired. Hell, he leaves precious few clichés unused (we've got a macho, bullying jock, a bitchy co-worker, etc.). Williamson is too patently predictable with his revelations about who's a werewolf and who's not, but then utilizing a mystery quotient may never have been a top priority. Eisenberg and a gorgeous Ricci do what they can, but it's hard to really care about these characters. The movie also ended up already dated by the time it finally got released, because Kilborns' show was defunct by that point. And WAY too much screen time is devoted to prepping an interview with, of all people, Scott Baio. Both Rick Baker and the KNB are credited with effects work, and while some designs and gore are decent, the CGI monster is extremely laughable. The formula for these modern fright flicks was definitely wearing thin by this point, with the "hot, hip" soundtrack, and the "hot young cast" can't bring any gravitas to this material at all.Among the familiar faces: Portia de Rossi, Mya, Shannon Elizabeth, Milo Ventimiglia, Joshua Jackson, Nick Offerman, Judy Greer, and Michelle Krusiec. Derek Mears plays the werewolf; Michael Rosenbaum appears unbilled as Kyle.If this *is* supposed to be a parody, it still doesn't work because it's just not that funny (not when it's supposed to be, anyway).Five out of 10.
NileFortnerBoogieBuddha954 I believe the movie Cursed is not a bad film. It takes a very stylized unique approach. It mixes an old horror film genre, with a new modern day look. I believe the film received negative reviews because at the time a majority of audience members didn't understand what this film was trying to accomplish. Cursed is a film straight out of the late 1970s. It captures the unique look and sense of a movie from that era, from its cinematography, to the feel of its script. Like the Scream movies, Cursed is a PG-13 horror flick, aimed at the same teenage audience it portrays on screen. Slashers like Craven's previous stalkers Ghostface or Freddy Krueger are out (although Krueger does make an amusing brief background appearance). This time the subject matter is werewolves. Brother and sister Ellie, played by Christina Ricci (Addams Family Values, Black Snake Moan) and Jimmy, played by Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Adventure land) are driving home one evening when something hits their car, causing them to spin out of control and hit another vehicle, driven by Becky, played by Shannon Elizabeth (God I miss Shannon Elizabeth). As they attempt to save Becky, trapped within her car, a monstrous form rips her free, killing Becky and injuring Ellie and Jimmy. Who let the dogs out? (Damn that was a bad pun LOL) (It's a fu#kin' Werewolf people!)This may not be Wes Craven's best film; however, it is still entertaining to some level. Screenwriter Kevin Williamson (Scream) and Wes Craven still work well together. The story does get a little predictable, and the characters are paper thin (not well rounded, or unique) Jimmy is a stereotypical geek that we've seen over and over again. Plus, I know Christina Ricci is a much better actress than what she is given to do in this film.I do believe some effort went into this film. My biggest issue is I just didn't find it to be scary, and honestly some parts are a little dull. With some rewrites, the story could have had better scares, more suspense, tension, better character development and more. So these are my final Bitchin' Buddha thoughts on Cursed. The movie knows its audience. It is a decent, fun, watchable B movie. If you enjoy those, you might enjoy this. I do believe this film could have been much better with some rewrites. I believe the film cursed earns a…6/10This review is brought to you by Boogie Buddha, and remember, don't just get down, but get Boogie. Thank you for reading/viewing, and I hope you have an amazing day as always. :)
bbickley13-921-58664 Made even more painful by the fact that the movie was made by the same master minds who brought us (up to that point) the Scream Trilogy. Thank you Wes Craven for attempting a werewolf movie in a time were the horror of this classic monster seems to be going out of Fashion. It's too bad that his choice was to play down the horror. Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson seem to be cashing in on the Scream franchise with another horror film that is more about the satire than about the fright. In one of his early roles, Jessie Esenberg plays a geek who got bit by a werewolf and rather than be the least bit frighten by the whole thing he just does the research needed to be the best wolf he can be.I'll admit that part I did like. What I found strange was Christina Ricci plays his older sister also bitten by the wolf and with this power, still ended up being a helpless victim. What's worse is that her character is a carbon copy of Scream's Sydney Prescott. In fact, the whole story has a lot of elements of Scream in it as the protagonist need to figure out who the alpha dog is that's been killing young girls in the Hollywood hills. This and many other attempts of the master of horror milking his last cash cow, lowers the coolness of the film.I miss the days of American Werewolf in London and the Howling where you could be more frighten of this monster, and I really hoped this movie could do more to bring it back, but it didn't.
