Di Bobi The cube no longer has an interesting design but is as generic and uninteresting as ever. I say 'cube' not 'cubes', because all of the movie clearly happens on the exact same small and boring set.The camera is spinning around the cube all zoomed in for long, puke-inducing amounts of time. I really felt sick and my eyes started to hurt somewhere in the middle of watching this. Whoever filmed this overdid that spinning to create fake tension. It felt truly obnoxious. The characters are somewhat like-able this time though. At least for most of the movie, they're not as flat and 'just there to hysterically yell and die' like in the other two movies, eventhough the cliche 'violent male' and 'generic smart I'm-gonna-survive-this female' characters from the other movies are still in this one, except the obligatory 'violent male' character is white for once. There are no deaths in this movie as much as in the first one, and the ones that are present are accompanied by terrible CGI and aura of fake-ness, but the movie still manages to be interesting most of the time, due to the decent characters at because it delivers *some* answers to plot holes missing from the first Cube.If you enjoyed the first Cube movie, watch this one with low expectation, and by all means DO NOT WATCH THE THIRD ONE because it will ruin the whole series for you - it's THAT awful. This one though - worth the watch. It's a solid 'okay' B-movie.
sol- This sequel of sorts to Vincenzo Natali's 'Cube' once again focuses on a group of strangers who realise that they have been kidnapped and placed inside a labyrinthine cube structure with interlocking rooms. This time though, it is a hypercube (a cube with four dimensions) and rather than any of the rooms being booby trapped, several just collapse on themselves as the unstable structure reaches the point of implosion. Some elements of the film are highly predictable, such as each character only ever so gradually divulging that they are connected to a weapons manufacturer who has designed the cube. The performances also range from over-the-top theatrical to overly comical with a senile old lady in the mix and some of the special effects are simply mediocre. Despite all this, 'Hypercube' is relatively encapsulating to view with lots of intriguing science fiction concepts talked about and explored. Most fascinating are the chambers in which time is sped up and slowed down and all the constant shifts in gravity as the characters move from one room to the next renders the whole experience unsettling. The intimate camera-work is great too, often walking and spinning around the characters in tight close-up. This certainly is not a worthless motion picture, but it certainly is more than a step below the original so fans may want to exercise caution.
Bob An I watched the first movie - Cube yesterday I really enjoyed it. I did not write a review for that one but I did rate it eight stars! The follow up - Hypercube is really bad. It is awfully boring and so uninspired! The story is similar to the first part and even the number of people and even their roles: one bad guy / a killer, one blond woman who knows it all, one handicapped person in some way ... but the first one actually was quite good and the story and all was interesting. Here, nothing is good. While watching it, I was thinking to myself several times when it will end! The acting was mediocre. The effects were kinda too plastic / amateur looking. The ending of the film was puzzling ( though I guess it gives a way to the third part) and somewhat unnecessary.I am really not sure if there is one really good point about this movie. Maybe I am still influenced by the first one, so I am giving this one 4. It may deserve less.
David Arnold After waking up, a group of people find themselves locked in what appears to be some kind of cubed maze with seemingly no way out. With no idea on why they are there, or how they got there, they must all work together to try and find a way out, but as strange things start to happen, they all start becoming more & more desperate.OK no beating about the bush here - Cube 2: Hypercube is the biggest load of dross and is arguably one of the worst movies you'll watch. The first film was interesting and had a very original idea and storyline and it's actually a film that, while seemingly complex to understand at times, you followed.Cube 2, however, is the complete opposite of Cube with no real story. The first film dealt with mathematical logic, but this one is a bit like the cubed version of Donnie Darko and deals with alternate realities and parallel universes. It's an interesting idea but unfortunately it's very poorly executed as it just leaves you wondering what is going on with it posing more questions and not delivering any answers. The whole movie just seems to get made up as it goes along as the story is just a mess and not one part logically follows on from the other. Some of the effects are pretty neat and well done, but that is really all that is good about this movie.Honestly, do not waste your time with this one.
