Artur Machado Action/mystery/thriller and some romance with Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts e Patrick Stewart. Gibson gives one of his best roles and is the only legitimate reason to see this movie. The title is misleading, as it suggests immersion in some one of the various conspiracy theories, but the film turns out to be only a generic generality in this regard, serving only as a pretext for a thriller with a basic convoluted plot and for Gibson to be able to shine in his depiction of crazy conspiracy theorist nutcase. In the end it turns out to be just another action thriller with nothing memorable to highlight.
Suzie I looked at the score of this film before watching it. 6.7/10, I thought, can't disappoint me. I know what I'm getting and I know what I'm in for. If it were rated 10, I'd expect a disappointment. If it were rated 4, I'd steer clear. I thought 6.7 was a fair rating. It's not. The film is less about conspiracy and more of a combination of action, car chase, random fights, guns, NYC street hacks, etc. It wants it to be about the big bad government, especially security agencies, but doesn't go too far with it to not upset people. It's too theatrical for my liking. A government agency has Doctor Jonas, an evil scientist who interrogates Fletcher (Gibson). Fletcher escapes, so Doctor Jonas conducts the investigation in finding him. Then Doctor Jonas conducts the manhunt to get Gibson. What? Is he or isn't he a doctor? Aren't there other agents that are better at this? Isn't the doctor part of his name mean that he's hired to do medical stuff, not conduct manhunts? Oh, this is one of those agencies where only one guy is in charge, he does everything himself, and everyone else is his goon. He has no superiors, no directives, no one to report to.The big names ruin the picture. Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart are too high profile for this picture. I'm just not buying Gibson as a cabbie, sorry. Their forced attraction feels forced. I don't see him being attracted to her at all.Ultimately, this film is not entertaining. The mystery isn't that much of a mystery because everything is solved through action, not through investigation. This is a film about conspiracies, but the cabbie solves things by blocking a bridge with his car and running or tying a hot dog stand to an undercover car so that it drags it across the street. Not entertaining, not enlightening, not anything.
Leofwine_draca A so-so thriller which starts off brilliantly and yet come the end, has bombarded us with so many clichéd plot twists and frankly stupid explanations as to the motives of the characters that it quickly becomes unbelievable and almost unwatchable. The first half hour, though, is great entertainment, with Mel Gibson taking his psychotic persona from the LETHAL WEAPON films one step further in his manic portrayal of a conspiracy theorist. In fact, it is Gibson's presence which makes this film shine and he is perfectly cast - I don't think any other of today's actors would fit the role as well as he. Julia Roberts is the love interest, and she is, well...Julia Roberts. I may be biased but I really do hate that woman. Patrick Stewart lends sinister support as the chief villain, but he never really does anything that villainous, he just walks around and looks mean. What this film is worth watching for are some surprisingly insane set pieces, such as the moment where Gibson torches his entire apartment, or the bit where he flees from the bad guys while strapped to a wheelchair! There are a few good action bits as well, but nothing spectacular. For an interesting spin on the old action formula, this is worth watching, even if only for Gibson.
juneebuggy Conspiracy Theory is a fairly good movie, it's entertaining sure but it did tend to drag in parts for me and felt inconsistent as a whole. Mel Gibson's crazy performance waffles between brilliance and just plain over-the-top and I had a hard time believing any part of the romancy thing going on between him and Julia Roberts as he was just a little too certifiable for anyone to fall for. And while the whole conspiracy theory/Manchurian Candidate aspect was super interesting there were also sections explaining this storyline that just went on too long and ended up being really boring. Enjoyed Patrick Stewart as the bad guy 08.13
