Reviews

dcarsonhagy With all of today's modern technology, it is next to impossible to keep anything from anyone. That can be a problem. However, today's technology can also be quite helpful for a people suffering through their own personal hell. Such is the case for "Coming Out."Alden Peters has decided it is time for him to come out of the closet. He has also decided to film the reactions he gets when he tells his friends and his family. Alden decided he wanted to film his journey in order to help other people who might be living their lives in constant pain--wanting so desperately to tell someone, yet never being able to muster the courage to do so. He covers ALL bases: the fear, the self-loathing, the self doubt, all the questions--to finally self acceptance.Even in this century, announcing your sexual preference is no walk in the park. Although he knows his sexual preference is men, he really does not identify in any other way with a gay lifestyle. He has boundless questions which really have no pat--much less easy-- answers. I thought this film was extremely well made, well directed, and very real. In fact, I am surprised at the overall rating this movie garnered. The only aspect of the film that did not resonate well with me is the film seemed too sugar coated. If Mr. Peters really wanted to be true to his message, he should have shown at least one coming out story that didn't end so well. I am sure most of us are better acquainted with those stories. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy seeing positive reactions and reinforcement, but everyone knows for every positive reaction, there are going to be many more negative ones. This film is unrated. It contains some language and adult situations. I highly recommend it.
