I really, really like Clifford; it's so funny! I probably find it to be a lot funnier than others might whom really didn't like it so much. I watched it as a kid and was fond of it and still am. I love the Clifford character! Clifford is such a mischievously funny brat! Hahaha! I really love Martin Short and he makes the Clifford character so, so funny. C'mon now....Clifford is good. Taking a lighthearted approach to watching Clifford is the only way to watch it. It can really be unsavory and obnoxious if you take it the wrong way. It's a perverse make-believe. Clifford is completely cantankerous as it's nothing but wacky and foolishly silly the whole way through. It's wholly surrounded around its characters. Charles Grodin does a nice and funny job in bumping heads with Clifford. That seems pretty natural for those two, not necessarily in a hateful manner. Mary Steenburgen as Miss Sarah Davis brings a real sweetness to the movie. I think my ongoing crush with Mary Steenburgen started with Clifford. Dabney Coleman very well interacts with Steenburgen's character as he tries to woo her. Richard Kind as Clifford's dad was nice to see. I love Ben Savage in the beginning and end scenes when Clifford is a priest. Those scenes are really good. The Dinosaur World ending has overlying messages to it. Clifford is a deliberately honest story and a good outlet for potentially troublesome boys.

As I sit in front of my computer monitor, I am trying very hard to sort out all of the extremely bizarre things that I witnessed in "Clifford" and write down just how exactly the movie fails. Okay, I paused for a moment after writing that last sentence, and I think I can start listing the movie's errors in judgement, and they all center around the title character. The character of Clifford simply does not work. Though he's supposed to be a 10 year-old boy, he is not convincing as one. He has a lot of bizarre adult-sounding dialogue that doesn't sound like it's coming from a real boy. Maybe his bizarre lingo was supposed to be funny, but I didn't laugh once hearing it. His comic mischief is also supposed to be funny, but isn't. It comes across as coming from a cruel, hateful individual who doesn't seem to be misguided or have a proper sense of humor. The various tricks to make Martin Short fit his character don't work as well. As an old man in the wraparound segments, he looks ghastly in his old age makeup. As a child, he looks like an adult in children's clothing despite efforts by the special effects team to make him appear to be shorter.Grodin, Steenburgen, and Coleman (who actually looks good sporting a beard) do what they can, but are hampered by the unfunny script and a director who doesn't seem to realize this was an ill-conceived project. The movie's unique failure at times makes it watchable in a car-wreck sort of fashion, but eventually becomes tiresome.

Before I got to watch this movie voluntarily, I rated it two stars based on one syndicated review in my newspaper when it was in theaters who gave it no stars. So when did I watch this? On Sunday morning at 4 A.M. I took Lunesta but kinda delayed its work so that I could watch the movie, with the sound on. Normally I watch movies on muting if I'm only channel-surfing, not, like, preparing to watch it. (Example: "Oh! This film will be on in a few hours!") I thought I was gonna subject myself to poor dialogue that's comparable to what settles at the Bottom 100. Turns out, whatever Martin Short, Charles Grodin, Mary Steenburgen, & the others were saying weren't really that bad. "Clifford" wasn't the first "bad seed" movie & won't be the last, but it sure ain't the best or one of the 25 best. Short's eponymous character actually wasn't likable. I guess it's easy to hate such a character when the kid is played by an adult as opposed to real kids such as in "Problem Child." Again, this comedy may suck, but not to the point that you lose your faith in religion. It's just another bad movie that's only suitable to watch on TV at the same hours as infomercials & reruns of sitcoms canceled at least seven years ago.

CLIFFORD, in my opinion, is an excellent comedy about a ten-year-old menace from hell. If you ask me, the stunts that Clifford (Martin Short) pulled were absolutely hilarious. Also, I thought that Sarah (Mary Steenburgen) was a very beautiful woman, and she was truly meant to be with Martin (Charles Grodin). However, while I was watching this movie, I wondered how she couldn't see Clifford's true colors. When Julien (Richard Kind) and Theodora (Jennifer Savidge) were yelling at Clifford, I felt really good. In addition, I thought that Gerald (Dabney Coleman) and Parker (G.D. Spradlin) were pure a*******. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that everything about this film was excellent, especially the performances. Now, in conclusion, to all you Martin Short, Charles Grodin, or Mary Steenburgen fans who have not seen this excellent comedy about a ten-year-old menace from hell, I highly recommend it.
