utgard14 Charlie Chan (Sidney Toler) is in Rio de Janeiro to arrest a woman suspected of killing a man in Honolulu. When the woman is murdered, Charlie must investigate along with "Number Two Son" Jimmy (Victor Sen Yung). Pretty much a remake of The Black Camel. Adorable Iris Wong is fun as the murdered woman's maid. Her scenes with Jimmy are the movie's highlights. Harold Huber makes his last Charlie Chan appearance. Toler and Sen Yung are good as usual. Rest of the cast includes Victor Jory, Kay Linaker, and Hamilton MacFadden (who directed The Black Camel, interestingly enough). It's a pleasant and enjoyable entry in the series. Not one of the best or worst. This is the second-to-last Chan film at Fox before the dreadful Monogram series begins.
Lechuguilla The film gets off to a good start with some nice south-of-the-border music and atmosphere, set in a Rio nightclub. Here we meet the future murder-ee and most of the suspects. Eventually, the plot shifts to a spacious mansion, where a party for the murder-ee brings forth all the nightclub suspects plus a couple of others. The story gives us an interesting puzzle. Despite the large number of suspects, (approx. nine), I correctly guessed the identity of the killer, but for the wrong reason. Clues are rather subtle, which is good. To correctly guess both the murderer and the motivation, a viewer will need to employ his or her powers of inference. A cigarette, a cup of coffee, and the sharp pin of a lady's broach give Charlie Chan (Sidney Toler) what he needs to solve the case. But the clues do not explain the killer's motivation.B&W visuals are quite good. But there are no menacing shadows, nor are there other elements that create spine-tingling suspense. Casting is acceptable, as is most of the acting. Prod design is more detailed here than in other Chan films. In addition to lack of suspense, another problem is the presence of some filler scenes involving number 2 son Jimmy Chan. I suppose he's included for comic relief. But he overacts. And I find him annoying.Jimmy Chan aside, "Charlie Chan In Rio" makes for a pleasant way to spend an hour, as the production values and story are pretty good.
Michael O'Keefe Oriental sleuth Charlie Chan(Sidney Toler)travels to Brazil with #2 son Jimmy(Sen Yung). On the trail of a singer, who killed her lover in Honolulu, Chan finds her working in a Rio night club. The attractive singer is planning to elope with a rich playboy; but before she can leave and before Chan and the local police can make an arrest, she is found stabbed to death. While the body is found in her upstairs bedroom, a group of friends gather downstairs for a going away party. Chan will not be fooled by planted clues. Son Jimmy is actually helpful in solving this second murder. The cast includes: Cobina Wright Jr., Truman Bradley, Mary Beth Hughes, Victor Jory and Kay Linaker.
Mike-764 Charlie and son Jimmy arrive in Rio de Janerio to arrest singer Lola Dean in connection with a murder in Honolulu. Lola, who is engaged to Clark Denton, plans to elope with her lover after confessing to a mystic, in a drug induced state, the murder of Manuel Cardosa. Charlie (along with Jimmy and Inspector Souto) arrives at Lola's house to arrest the murderess, but is found dead by her secretary Helen Ashby. Soon every person connected with Lola (who happen to be invited to the engagement party that night) is suspected of her murder. Its up to Charlie to uncover the clues of a broken pin, missing broach, and coffee and cigarettes to reveal the killer. A remake of the Black Camel, and this version is only slightly better due to some more interesting characters and better camera advancements, but really only worth viewing so you can just say you have seen every Chan film. Has the same plot holes and corniness as the previous version. Rating, 5.
