In Seattle, detective Quentin Conners is unfairly suspended and his partner Jason York leaves the police force after a tragic shooting on Pearl Street Bridge, when the hostage and the criminal die. During a bank heist with a hostage situation, Conners is assigned in charge of the operation with the rookie Shane Dekker as his partner. The thieves, lead by Lorenz, apparently do not steal a penny from the bank. While chasing the gangsters, the police team disclose that they planted a virus in the system, stealing one billion dollars from the different accounts, using the principle of the Chaos Theory. Prismark10 Chaos looks like a bog standard B film with two action stars but it has a twist or two up its sleeve but it stills makes for a lacklustre film with shades of Inside Man.Jason Statham plays Quentin Connors a suspended cop when a hostage situation went wrong and is recalled to action to deal with a bank robber (Wesley Snipes) who broke into a bank and left without stealing a penny.Connors is teamed up with a rookie played by Ryan Phillippe who gives the film acting credibility and comes into his own in the second half of the film when Connors is off the scene. Its a derivative low rent action film which had budgetary problems during filming. Snipes plays a glorified cameo who literally phones in his performance and it has to employ flashbacks for the film's plot to make sense as well as unravel its twist and turns. The title alludes to chaos theory which is in fact employed by the robbers in this film as the bank robbery is a diversion for a more elaborate techno heist. Maybe they should had got Jeff Goldblum in to explain the plot.
bowmanblue There are some films that are basically the same story you've seen a hundred times, but are done in a way that just elevates them above the mediocre. Chaos is one of them. You can hate it for Jason Statham's (dubious) attempt at an American accent, or you can just ignore it and go along for the ride.Jason Statham and Ryan Phillippe play a couple of cops on the trail of Wesley Snipes, after he and a gang rob a bank. Or do they? There are many questions raised by the 'heist' and, although some have likened it to 'Inside Man' (another film about a bank heist) Chaos may start out predictable, but there are enough twists and turns along the way to keep it interesting. It'll never be a classic. It doesn't have the 'star power' to really make people take much notice of it. And, like I said, it's not a classic, but, if you're looking for some cops and robbers action with a few decent twists, you could probably do worse (like try and do an American accent when you're from London - seriously, they could have just made it so that Statham was a British guy who just so happened to work in the U.S.).
LAmitch ... But not so much really. Guess that's why I had never heard of it before I saw it listed in the satellite guide. Snipes and Statham, should be reasonably good, but the plot, dialog, and plot devices were just painful. After the setup and opening scenes, we are at a bank robbery hostage situation; the bank blows up, and all the hostages and robbers escape in the confusion. I mean explosions that blow the facade off a building almost never hurt the people inside, right? And then when the police were staking out the bad guys, and one of the police officers' pager goes off causes a shoot out; I almost deleted the recording right then and there. Also, Phillippe really can't pull off the smart / tough cop character he is trying to play.Thecnically the film looked good, and there were a couple of interesting plot twists in the second half that surprised me, but the poor dialog and improbable plot devices just over powered what little good was in the movie. It might be good enough to keep teenage boys entertained for two hours.
mbgondor Truth be told I watched this movie for one reason only. Jason Statham. That said I did find other things to like about this movie and a few I could have done without. Now I will grant anyone who reads this that I've not watched many Ryan Philippe movies. If I did I don't remember he was in them. His performance was rather blah. Even Wesley Snipes with as little screen time as he had made his character interesting. Now back to the things I liked. This movie starts out with a bang. I really loved how they told the back story through the audio clips and newspapers. That stood out. It made Connors bad attitude when his boss shows up at his door a little more understandable. One thing they could have elaborated more one was why Snipes' character quit, retired or whatever it was he did. I didn't pick up on that. The twist at the end is what really throws you. When I saw it and it is a doozy (trust me) I was blown away. I had to rewind and watch it one more time before it clicked. You just aren't expecting it.The end was worth the blah from Philippe who seems to be trying too hard or not hard enough to balance out his costars. Chaos was a good thriller.
