Paul Nevai I am about 50 years older than the characters in the film. As it turns out they speak a different English than I. Even with subtitles and even if many of the words sounded familiar, I was completely lost. Finally, after 80 minutes, I admitted defeat and stopped watching it.Please note that I am a white person who lives in the US just like the kids in the movie. In addition, I am a retired professor at a major state university who dealt with thousands of kids over the years. Nevertheless, I never in my life met kids with such an odd vocabulary. Am I out of touch?
ijsmariabou Since I saw Brick is has raised to the first position of my list of film noir films. I have liked a lot the film although there have been parts that I haven't understood. This film shows the structure of the film noir because is has a lot of characteristics. For example they don't show happiness in all the movie they are a lot's of scene which are urban and dark, i this film they give lot of importance to the cigarette that in film noir is a really big characteristic. When you see this film you are really integrated and make you think a lot to know who has kill Em (protagonist) . I think that every body can like this film because is a film noir but modern. I have liked the film a lot but there was some scene that I didn't understood.
Robae Williams No, I believe that Brick doesn't follow the traditional film noir structure because the main protagonists a teenager, not an adult. The mood of the film is very sketchy and quite unsettling. I was very confused at the end of the movie, and the dialogue was so difficult to catch which was why I rated the movie so low. Yes, I think the dialogue in Brick confuses the audience. However, the dialogue does give the movie some style and variety, but for me the movie is still not good. I didn't enjoy this film because of the confusing points in the plot and the strange style of dialogue. I would have changed the dialogue and made some of the plot points more clear to the audience.
Ronin Cunningham Brick was an interesting mix of a film noir style in a modern high school environment. I enjoyed the film, as it was one that stood out to me as I have not seen such a unique idea come to the screen. I feel like Brick followed the same story structure as a noir. The common formula is that the viewer is presented with a mystery, and is given another piece of the puzzle after that until it all comes together. Brick followed this common path of film noirs, although I felt that the ending could have been stronger. Instead of explaining everything and spoon feeding the big twist at the end, it could have shown us (perhaps with the use of flashbacks) instead of telling us. The general tone of the film is portrayed as the high school setting being very harsh, laced with the classic popularity hierarchy that gives another interesting dimension to the film. I think that Brick's style of dialogue is very smart. It holds that classic dialogue from other noirs, showcasing a pleasant homage to films such as Casablanca, Bladerunner, etc. In essence, the film was good, but not great. It presented interesting dialogue, camera/editing techniques, and a story set in a unique environment that no other film I have seen has tackled. I would change the ending to show more and tell less, as it came off a lazy storytelling. For all of these reasons, I give it a solid 8 out of 10.
