Mike Joseph Raymond This is a sweet, simple movie but yet with the strange Tom Dicillo stamp on it.John Turtturo is great as an uptight engineer on the verge of a mid-life crisis.Sam Rockwell as "The Kid" brings a great contrast to Turtturo's character and makes for a wonderful chemistry between the two.Dermot Mulroney and Catherine Keener are great at playing oddball characters. As a matter of fact the movie is loaded with day players with great one liners.Simply shot -- it works. The kind of movies à la "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" you'll fall in love with and will able to watch over and over and over. I never get tired of it.
merklekranz John Turturro has no problem morphing into a midlife crisis family man. The problem is not with John Turturro, the problem is a free form script that goes nowhere. This movie is just plain boring, especially the redundant swimming hole scenes. Dermot Mulroney's character is far from believable. I mean living in the woods with your half-house entirely exposed to the elements is beyond ridiculous. Mulroney is unlikable and uninteresting. At 112 minutes the movie just plods along from one boring scene to the next. Bizarre is alright if the characters lead somewhere, but "Box of Moonlight", like a dog chasing it's tail goes nowhere. - MERK
dwp64 This movie is incredible, That being said Men can relate to this Movie as where Women look at it be-shuffled a bit. It is a "what is the meaning of life" movie for men...Tom DiCillo has done what many dream of and that is writing a master piece... This movie is so underrated.I give this movie as gifts to ones who like great movies and this is one that not many have seen. It seems to have slipped under the radar when it was released, but make no mistake this is a timeless classic at it's best.Tom DiCillo relates to the average American male and gets it right. That is something in general Hollywood doesn't get....John Turturro and Sam Rockwell are incredible in this movie and make it work so effortlessly... they made a great tandem slash odd couple that just works great. Catherine Keener also with a great supporting role... And even the soundtrack is incredible...I watch this movie once a year near or on the 4th of July holiday and I just keep finding new things that make this movie timelessly enjoyable....
Nadine Due of my obsession for Sam Rockwell i found this wonderful piece of film, knowing absolutely nothing about it, and...what can I say....it's well as we would say it in German: einfach wunderbar.....Tom DiCillos Film describes in very brilliant scenes how a boring typical American father and husband discovers what life meant to be.... This film has several great scenes in it...the all-American-way of life is present throughout the whole story, showing for example this really fat boy jumping around the pool, or the incredible friendly woman of the car-renal-station....John Turturro is brilliant as this empty man, who seems to never had any joy in his whole life, accept as a kid at this lake where he travels to, as the had some days off after work.... On his way he meets Buck alias The Kid, a young man who lives deep in the woods far away from every society..For seven days now these very different people get together...and it's so inspiring to see them become...well....some kind of friends. Sam Rockwell is absolutely gorgeous as The Kid, i had this weird feeling - whenever he's in – i have to embrace this grown-up kid ever and ever again, never let him go.... His face in this scene when Turturro's Character wants to get back the key for his car.... indescribable...wow.... Well....surely i only want to intimate that this film is acting at it's purest.... In the end Turturro's Character as changed, in a little not so obvious way...an me to.
