There are similarities to Taken and other films involving kidnappings, but Seagal's presence still provides sustenance to fans of this films. The main criticism is Seagal is portly for his fight scenes and so there was slo-motion camerawork and wire-work and body doubles, but this is somewhat tempered by the down-to-earth feel to the film which doesn't pretend to be anything other than its budget level. There's good location work, nice scenery, which makes this show tick along.
Thanks to the direction of Siu-Tung Ching, it was executed rather well in comparison to other films Seagal had been involved with during this period, especially in creating some tension. It also had reasonable production values for a video release, and although it suffers from its pacing and script, it delivers plenty of action to stick around for.

Belly of the Beast is one of the best Steven Seagal flick i ever seen.Directed by Siu-Tung Ching a famous Hong Kong director with some movie you may know like:A Chinese Ghost Story and Swordman so his touch very noticeable in this movie. The action is very Hong Kong-like with high body count in heroic bloodshed shootout style.Steven Seagal send enemies fly with his aikido or perfect deflect arrows in close up is just tip of the iceberg in this movie.Later on is get even more crazier when in the middle of a fight Steven Seagal get cursed by black magic so a bunch of monks help him battle a voodoo master. That scene is so out of place that the only thing missing is cheap lightning special effects fly everywhere. The movie deserve more than just a 4,8 score on IMDb

i really enjoyed this Steven Segal film.mostly for the fight sequences of which there are many.and they are all very good, especially the final one, between Seagal and the main villain.the story itself is nothing new or original.in fact,it's been done to death,in my opinion.but the movie is quite fast paced,so it's not boring at all.the acting wasn't really all that bad either,in my opinion.i think this may be Seagal's best direct to video outing(DTV)up to this point.it may not compare to his theatrical releases, especially his first two or three, especially Under Siege(his best film),but it's not that bad considering.for me,Belly of the Beast is a 6/10

Who's naming these movies? I think the title department at Sony has a vendetta with Seagal. That has to be the only reason - all of Seagal's titles sound like his present weight condition. "Out Of Reach"?.....for a sandwich. "Today You Die"? Just add a T at the end of the title. "Submerged"? ....in fat. OK, I'll stop. But it's so addictive. Seagal could stand to lose a few pounds. He's wearing muumuus now. Just take a look at any recent picture of the man."Belly Of The Beast" has a bad title, but it's an entertaining movie. Jake Hopper's (Seagal) daughter is vacationing in Thailand when she is kidnapped by Islamic terrorists. Now Jake has to find her and stop the madness within. What's good about "Belly of the Beast" is that it looks like Seagal cares about this particular outing. He puts a lot of effort into the fight scenes. He's using wires and a stunt double, but he's trying. Seagal as an actor? He needs improvement but who watches his movies for the character development and dialogue? You can't hear what he's saying anyway. You need closed captioning and even that doesn't work sometimes."Belly Of The Beast" is junky fun at it's finest. For more insanity, please visit: comeuppancereviews.com
