Hollywood_Yoda BARBERSHOP was not a bad film, don't get me wrong, or think I'm bashing Ice Cube here, but Beauty Shop was a great film in its own right, a chick- flick if you will, starring Queen Latifah and Kevin Bacon. You read that right, Kevin Bacon, and he plays a very colorful character named Jorge (Hor-hey), the nemesis to Latifah's character, Gina.Alicia Silverstone co-stars, as does Andie MacDowell, Della Reese, and Alfre Woodard. A great supporting cast I may say, some well known faces, and lesser known ones as well. You'll see quite a different tone in this film, than you would from the BARBERSHOP films, more comedy and lightheartedness. A sweet story! This is probably the best film you will see Queen Latifah in, very much her style, unlike TAXI (2004), or BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE (2003). Neither of those films did her justice as Beauty Shop has done. This is a film you wouldn't be ashamed to take your mother to.
Brian T. Whitlock (GOWBTW) Not giving up is a way to go. Following your dreams will get you there, ever if the road is very bumpy. In "Beauty Shop" Queen Latifah plays Gina Norris, a single mother and profession hair stylist who lives in Atlanta, Georgia because her daughter is going to a prestigious school of music. She leaves the beauty shop in the city because the owner Jorge(Kevin Bacon) is a credit hog, and a jerk. Not only her, but her other friend Lynn(Alicia Silverstone), a shampooer goes along with the ride. With the help of some family and friends, the shop would be a hit. There were some of the people who kinda had issues with Gina having Lynn working with her. Gina just did away with them "birds", and the others didn't say a thing about it. Because they didn't want to do with them either. In that shop everyone had something to say, and was not shy about. Gina had it all, until vandals wrecked the shop. But that didn't stop her one bit. Common grounds made the business strong, and with Gina running the shop, who can stop her? Not even Jorge could throw a monkey-wrench into the plan. All he was left with is shorter hair. Very good movie, sends a powerful message as well. 3.5 out of 5 stars!
kay-rowe-1 I am fed up with some people why do they have to call the film racist? also why cant they see this film for what it really is a comedy that makes people laugh no matter what colour you may be. The problem with some people they cant see beyond their nose, they alway thinking that its got to mean something horrible wrong. that why more people cause war then talk. I am a white person and I could not stop laughing though out the film. Queen was brilliant throughout it, and I was not offended because I saw what it was comedy and it was funny, some people cant laugh at them selves these days, as long as they laugh with you and not at you what is the problem. I would suggest if you are fed or not, you have got to watch this film you wont stop laughing believe me and rest of the stars were also brilliant to watch .
edwagreen Queen Latifah opens a beauty shop after her big argument with her boss.Latifah is kind, intelligent but just plain out of luck.Kevin Bacon steals the film in his role as the gay boss with a thick German accent. Wearing his blond wig, Bacon is hilarious in a performance that should have been considered for best supporting actor. The women and man hairstylist have a comment for everything and everyone but the film just seems to meander about. The writers should have remained focused on Latifah's relationship with the evil Bacon, who conspires with the State Board to ruin her after she takes business away from him.An aging Della Reese has a wasted one scene role as a high class woman entering the shop. Miss Reese was offered few lines and disappears rapidly.Alfre Woodard, as one of the stylists, is effective in her common talk but no nonsense approach.
