armoredtanker What can one say about a movie that even Gen. Omar Bradley refused to endorse. Simply awful.Any student of history will see how awful this movie is. First the tanks. Okay so there were no King Tigers, except for 3, left in the world. So you had to borrow M47 Pattons from Spain. The M24s used as Sherman okay guess they were to lazy to locate some. The Battle at the beginning in the forest, snow? There was none during the start of the attack. The Battle for the town. Using tanks to shell the town. That was dumb. Where is the German Artillery. They amassed large amounts for the attack. Germans would not waste time in attacking a town that tanks should bypass and leave to the follow up infantry. The final battle in the desert, yes desert, was so pathetic. By the time the Germans had reached the Meuse area the weather was horrible. Cold and snow, plus fog had descended on the battle. The tank column led by Col. Hessler was supposed to either represent the column led by Col. Peiper, SS, or the 2nd Panzer that was stopped at Celles by the US 2nd Armored. One part that bugged me was the Corp Commander, Robert Ryan asking for 155mm guns. Every US Infantry Division had a battalion of 155s. A US Corp would have several independent artillery battalions as well. Well for the most part I can watch this movie with the bad over the top acting. And the British Eighth Army was in Italy not north of the 1st US Army in Belgium. That was the 2nd Army UK.
SnoopyStyle It's December 1944. The Allies troops are confident to finish the war quickly. The Germans plan a major offensive to retake Antwerp. Former cop Lt. Col. Kiley (Henry Fonda) tries to warn his superiors about an imminent attack against the thin worn American lines but Gen. Grey and Col. Pritchard dismiss his concerns. Sgt. Guffy (Telly Savalas) is a tank commander who is more concerned with wheeling and dealing. Maj. Wolenski (Charles Bronson) commands a frontline position. The start is mostly Henry Fonda investigating the planned attack with a good side story of German Col. Hessler being put in command of the Tiger tanks. The tanks are obviously wrong but I understand the difficulties. There are a lot of rewriting of history in this movie. Henry Fonda being at every important place gets way too coincidental. Essentially, a massive battle in the war is boiled down to an one-man crusade. The fuel depot fight looks silly compared to the other parts of the movie. Nevertheless this is a compelling old-fashion big-action war movie. The tank battles looks pretty good.
AaronCapenBanner Despite impressive battle scenes, and an all-star cast(Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Telly Savalas, Robert Ryan, Robert Shaw, among others) this World War II adventure based on the true story is too bloated and long to succeed. Plot details how American forces in France were waiting to enter Germany, and end the war, when the Nazis launch a surprise counter-offensive that catches the allies off guard in the late 1944 winter. Film is further hampered by too many subplots off a soap-opera nature(lost loves, doomed romances, etc.) that only bog down a film that needed an infusion of energy. Not without some interest and entertainment value, but a missed opportunity.
ToughXArmy Warner Bros released this fine World War II Movie which I enjoyed a lot.The Cast is very fine indeed with stalwart film work from a cast of professionals such as Robert Ryan, Dana Andrews and Ty Hardin among many other fine actors. The real fine acting is done by one of the finest actors ever in my estimation ever go grace the great silver screen Mr. Henry Fonda.Congratulations to all for their work on this fine fine film and I recommend this movie to film buffs of the Military and the great men who fought for the ideals of America in The Battle Of The Bulge.Roger Mantee
