When I first read a summary of the plot, I felt a little weirded out. Batman set in a Victorian Gotham??? But the heavy atmosphere and especially the music score was great, and when you're dealing with such disturbing names as Jack The Ripper, it's definitely going to be. It could easily be just a dark neo noir direct-to-video film, because aside from the character names and the fact that it's in Gotham nothing screams Batman. The twists and turns through the film makes it a gripping murder mystery, though, so therefore I can't say that I disliked it. The final climactic battle was similar to the one against the Joker from "The Dark Knight Returns Pt 2", and since that's one of the greatest takedowns in my opinion, this one the highlights of the film. If you can look past the odd setting I'll say it's an engaging murder mystery with some disturbing imagery to emphasize the gory nature of one of history's most insane madmen.

I was intrigued when I found this animated "Batman" movie and decided to give it a go, since it felt like it had great potential given the setting in which it took place. However, while the setting was good, then the storyline was nothing more than your average generic and mediocre writing, which utterly diluted the entire experience. The overall impression of "Batman: Gotham By Gaslight" was a very mediocre one. And this is nowhere near being in the top league of animated "Batman" tales. The voice acting was good and the animation itself was good. But a mundane and unimaginative storyline just chopped everything right down without prejudice.Certainly, the hardcore fans of Batman will find some enjoyment in this animated movie. I, however, as a non-fan found it to be generic and mediocre at best.

Outside the idea of Batman vs the Ripper this took absolutely nothing from the comic. That might not be so bad but the story was garbage and was a bore to watch. Completely awful

People seem to miss the point of this one, as they are expecting Batman to have superhuman powers, while forgetting that in the end, he's just a man.Sure the caped crusader is a skilled fighter, but if he'd be all powerful, then it won't be any good to watch. What good is a hero if he can't be in danger? This picture delivers us just enough suspense to make it feel believable. And let's not forget that this is 19th century Gotham, where Batman doesn't have all the usual gadgets that we are used to, and he's not an all skilled, jack of all trades warrior like in the modern setting, where you need superpowers or overwhelming numbers to stand up in a fight with him.The atmosphere in this is great, the pacing is also spot on and the ending is just a little less predictable, where it has left me guessing till the very end toward the reveal of the killers identity. This is a fresh take on Batman, and if you're a DC fan like myself, you should properly enjoy this one, and it's defiantly for a mature audience, so keep your kids away from this one.
