After watching the 1988 Appleseed back to back with the 2004 version I can only say that the reviewers saying the old one was better are either delusional or remembering badly the original. While this film kind of skips some explanations that could enlighten people exposed to the Appleseed storyline for the first time, it is superior in both story and animation technique to the 1988 version. And that being a 3D animated film which, by my standards, have to really shine in order to surpass a hand drawn alternative. The conflict in the first one was an afterthought, the villain an insane person, the heroes police trying to find him. That they were Deunan and Briareos was incidental at best. In the 2004 version, the sides are not so clearly delimited and the scope of the entire film is only revealed closer to the end. The actions scenes are well done, the characters well defined, the tension real.Is it the best anime I've ever saw? No, absolutely not. However it is difficult to call it names, like a lot of other reviewers did. I can imagine someone who just watched Ghost in the Shell (the remade version, obviously, because they don't watch anything older than 2000) and comparing Appleseed to it and saying it is crap. Instead, try to compare it to the 1988 version or to all the over-sized boobs, summarily clad fighting girls that just melt when they see the high-school male hero. Come on!Bottom line: the story is not brilliant, but the anime is well done and worth a watch. I am off to see the newest Appleseed movies and series. That should tell you something about how much I enjoyed it.

Humans and a kind of genetic robot race live together in a perfect utopia, while a world war rages on the outside of their city. Of course, like all sci-fi, humans and robots don't get along. There are awkward issues about race, and the violence of man. It's all the same stuff that has been discussed before and in more subtle detail. Of course emotions are what makes humans both great AND evil. Blade Runner analyzed such themes with a lot more maturity. Here, the animation is nice and the action scenes are fairly awesome, even if some cheesy music invades the film at times. It could have served from dialogue being cut. Do we need lines such as "Move and I'll break your neck?" That's fairly obvious from the way you're holding her. I understand the need to explain such creative futuristic worlds, but writers need a better way to explain, instead of relying on dialogue.

Computer Animation and Anime are both interesting anime and most anime show's that are being released recently are combining Hand-Drawn Animation with Computer Animation. But here's a question: Have you ever wanted to see a computer-animated film with anime-looking characters? Well now you can with, "Appleseed". Based on the Manga by the same name. The movie follows the story about a warrior named, Deunan Knute, who get's plucked from fighting and find's herself in a futuristic town called, Olympus. She also discovers that half-human and half-clone citizens known as, Bioroids, live in the city. She soon teams up with her cyborg boyfriend, Briareos, to find a source of energy called, Appleseed. This film really blew me away mostly because of the animation. It was incredible. I even found the characters, Deunan and Briareos, cool. I also liked the story.I can't say much about this film because it was really amazing. This film is definitely worth watching if you're an anime fan or someone looking for a good sci-fi movie to watch.

This may or may not contain spoilers so eyeballs beware? Comparing this movie to past anime movies this movie blows those others away, mostly in visuals audio and character development/plot. It was a little weird going from hand drawn frame by frame anime to full CG like in this film. The way they did the CG makes it look like they had like CG bodies and hand drawn textures wrapped around the bodies(meshes), which makes it cool looking. its not like FF spirits within where they try to make it as close to reality as possible. In Appleseed the bodies are locked in place, what i mean is there's no out of bounds animation where the peoples bodies stretch or change with their emotions like in other anime films where you have a big head all of a sudden then the next scene its normal. To me thats childish and kinda ruins the feel of those old school animes. The character movements are based off real people doing the motions, giving it a realistic fluid motion like a real human would. which is awesome. The audio by far was pretty damn good. Whoever did the audio editing/mixing was a pro. Seems like surround sound, but i was using headphones. Just the ability to have a pre-made piece of music from some other artist, and blend it to the action and vary its pitch its crazy. Its like the music was made for the movie, maybe it was, i don't know. The character development was good too. If you have weak "eyeballs" you might cry when you see some scenes. So be warned.Overall I'd very highly recommend that you see this movie. Most visually stunning anime style movie i have ever seen (finial fantasy movies make their characters real looking, this one is like anime style cg) The squeal is coming out in 2007 in japan I hope its as good as this one if not better than this one.
