Alpha Girls screened at an art house theater nearby and I took a chance. Not a huge horror fan but I do like a good, cheap night of fun. The movie opens with a particularly sadistic murder and I was afraid the next 90 minutes I'd be stuck watching one senseless death after another. It turns out Alpha Girls was more like Carrie than it is like Saw.If we're just talking about plot then AG presses all the right buttons. You're subjected to some emotional scaring by the worst sorority sisters in history. The torture Veronica and her pink cronies inflict on the hapless new pledge class is humiliating, particularly the hazing scene in the basement with the hot iron brand shaped like a pentagram.I couldn't help wonder what sort of people are so desperate to be included that they'd degrade themselves like this. Somewhere around the third act the victims transform into the monsters. It's both satisfying and sad to see them get their revenge. The ending hints at a sequel and a post-credit short movie reveals a hidden twist!

I caught this film at a screening in Philadelphia at the legendary Trocadero theater. The place was packed to the ceiling and I would suggest seeing this film with a crowd. To call it fun might sound a bit too simple, but there are so many dull, dreary horror offerings being put out by Hollywood that it is refreshing to a film with this tone, especially from an independent source.Alpha Girls is a throwback of sorts to the B cinema of the 1970s, but with a conscience of the self referential films of the 80s and 90s (not limited to the horror genre). This film would be right at home as double feature with the 1980s dark comedy Heathers. And this is what the film is, a perfect dark comedy/horror comedy. It has the right balance of scares and laughs that again fit nicely with such greats as Night of the Creeps, Monster Squad, or even An American Werewolf in London. The acting was well done, especially within the genre, and Ron Jeremy's cameo was a bit of brilliance that I'm surprised hasn't garnered more mainstream attention.
The Hell You Say
I was lucky enough to catch this movie and Southwork, the band who scored the film, last night as it played in Knoxville.A lot of other reviewers note the campiness of the movie, but I didn't see what they did. Maybe I'm missing the point, but I think of the Adam West Batman series, Rocky Horror or even Return of the Living Dead when I think "campy" and I just didn't see that here. Don't take that to mean this is a movie that has no sense of humor, it does, but it also has one hell of a mean streak. That isn't a bad thing.Alpha Girls looks a lot bigger than a lot of movies with much larger budgets. Decent sets, costumes and some of the effects helped achieve that bigger feel. Intentional or not, the movie does have a bit of an 80's throwback feel and I'm OK with that either way. The acting is a little hit or miss, but is fine overall. Other than a "girls day out" scene that feels a little long, the movie is well paced. My biggest gripe would be some of the digital effects used feel less like a part of the scene and have a "pasted on" type of look.Overall, I had a good time watching this and would encourage anyone that enjoys a little satanism with their sorority girls or fun horror movies in general to check this out if the tour hits your town.Seeing what can be achieved with so little is promising for low budget films in general, but I look forward to seeing what these guys do next.

Alpha Girls is a great movie. You will be interested from start to finish. There are no parts that will put you to sleep like in other movies. The movie takes all place in Philadelphia with regular young inspiring actresses. You do see some males in the movie, but mostly females. The movie will give you into a glimpse into sorority life. It starts out with a new girl coming to a new school hoping for a fresh start. Everybody remembers their first day at a new school or job. Everybody can relate to trying to fit in a new school or job. She gets thrown into a room with girls who are already here. You see what life is for a typical lifestyle of a college girl. Get to see girls trust each other, revenge, & confessing to their misdeeds. The age group best suited to see this movie is from 18-25. While watching the movie I was so involved I did even have time to think about what was going to happen next or predict what will happen at the end. The movie is well done and well written. It is worth watching for a second time. Even the second time is still enjoyable. Have to watch the entire movie to see what happens at the end.
