I recently watched this movie when it was aired on TV, without any expectation out of it. Later, I realized that it was a masterpiece. The movie had no nudity and violence, but love. Keanu Reeves, has lived the character of Paul Sutton. The calm and caring attitude of Paul made me think as if Keanu has carried out of his real life. There was no cinematic acting by any of the actors. It felt me that I was entering a real family which values the family tradition and was cherished by the vineyard. The cinematography was excellent especially vineyard scenes and the festival. This movie is recommended for people who like movies which make us appreciate the real love.

this truly is my all-time fave movie. i love EVERYTHING about it from beginning to end. keanu reeves is wonderful in this. i wish they still made movies like this. the music, the cinematography, the scenery....PERFECTION. the best part of all........is FAMILY. this family is perfectly IMPERFECT. LOL. (mostly, of course, the father). but he comes around. love the TRADITIONS of this family. love that they hold fast to the traditions of their country, and again, family. love the scene where they are stomping the grapes. again....PERFECT. so much joy and fun. in conclusion, i loved it. i hated to see it end. which there had been a follow up movie made. a big thank you to the writers of this film for making such a wonderful film that you aren't embarrassed to watch with your family!!!

Reeves plays a GI back from the war who crosses paths with a young Hispanic woman on her way home, having been impregnated by one of her professors. She is convinced her old-world father will kill her, so the soldier offers to pose as her husband for one day. Of course, they quickly fall for each other, but this is complicated by the tyrannical father's hatred of this gringo, and the fact that the soldier is actually married to someone else. Beautifully photographed with a great musical score, this oddball romance should appeal to most females and sensitive males. Reeves and his costar, whose name I can't spell, are wonderful together. Giannini makes a great dastardly dad, and Quinn does his Zorba routine as the loving grandpa and family patriarch. The whole thing plays out like a fairy tale, sort of like "Pretty Woman." Which is to say, you won't believe it for one minute but you go along with it. And be prepared: The ending of this leisurely paced film is rather abrupt. An American director would have done a bit more, and staged a lavish wedding.

Having seen this in maybe 1996, it was a long time ago. I still remember feeling ill at ease at the acting of Reeves and even Aitana and the awkward way the plot was carried and scenes were wrenched. Now thinking about it, I remember and feel much. I wish to see this movie yet again to see why I remember the emotion I felt then, so well, so many years later. I came to like Reeves awkward style and I miss not seeing again the inner beauty of Aitana that seems to outshine her looks (not easy), I guess Italy is the luckier. It also is a fond memory for Anthony Quinn . I should try and find "The Machinist". Well then, just out of sappy compassion I gave it another star, even though I over rated it before. There is more than meets the eye.
