jlw-60862 41 is by far the gold standard of the microbudget/low budget indie genre which is saying a lot because I have been a fan of the genre for many years. I have seen virtually everything from 42K, Five Shells, Temporary Spirits to Finding Steve Phoenix and this is the best, in my view. That said, if you're expecting a white bread, star-studded bland mainstream movie-don't even bother. Just walk away and go see the latest Marvel thriller and enjoy the predictable corporate mindlessness-If you're like me, however, and seek out original, imaginative films by truly independent artists, this is by far the leader. The pacing and directing are flawless and there are no serious plot holes typical of self written/directed low budget indies. If you're into alternative realities and infinite possibilities this is the well-written, compelling storytelling for you.
johnathan smith I was pretty leery of the 7/10 rating as so many small films on IMDb get rated by cast/crew/family to push up their rating, but being a Sci-Fi fan I gave it a shot. I will say that this film takes a bit to get it's momentum. The acting, cinematography, and writing seem to get better as the movie goes along. The film started out with an amateurish feeling and ended feeling like a studio-produced movie. Here's a quick synopsis of the story: A man goes back in time to save his ex-girlfriend that died in a car crash, and ends up struggling with larger issues with larger consequences. All that being said, this was an excellent film. Great story. Everything about this movie works. The further the movie goes along the more you get sucked into it. Fantastic writing and a great execution. If you're a fan on science fiction, especially low budget science fiction like me, you'll enjoy this film.
Cathex This is an amateur film and parts of it are good, but for the most part it is still very amateur. Perhaps the best aspect is the directing and editing, which are probably good enough for mainstream film, but nothing amazing. The editing was well done, but again, fairly standard. Like any amateur film the acting ranges from reasonable to bad, but that's not exactly the directors fault given the limited budget.By far the biggest problem is the script which at times is quite poor, most noticeably when attempting to pose deep, metaphysical questions. At times I could hear the voice of the director speaking through his actors, and this sounded inept. In amateur film the scripting and plot are perhaps the only things not really held back by a restricted budget, and unfortunately neither aspect was that good. The film failed to evolve a coherent sense of empathy for the main protagonist, it feigned emotion more than produced any and nothing ever really became that interesting or exciting. Some characters, most noticeably the cops, were little more than 2-bit cliché's, and there were quite a few moments which were unnecessary, melodramatic and time-wasting. Having said that it's not unwatchable and as amateur film goes it's probably one of the better ones. But the director, in my opinion, is not ready to make feature length titles and needs to develop his abilities further, especially his screen-writing and scripting if he wants to write his own material. On the positive, however, I have seen Hollywood films that annoyed me far more and that's saying something.
allesichmache I truly wanted to like this movie. Especially after having seen some promising reviews/comments on youtube. But there are just too many for it to be considered worth the 80 minutes of one's life.If you are curious, head to youtube and look for this username there to see the list (provided he does not delete my comment) I came up with with just a bit of thought after viewing the thing. Spoilers are there as is a warning about them. Some highlights: 0) The acting is wooden and the delivery emotionless. The protagonist comes off as the most apathetic guy around. Even after the accident and discovery of what has transpired. He tries, I guess, refusing to play the game with the 'oracle of time', but it's still not a level of sadness I would expect at the realization of things. 1) Scene framing/staging/set issues. The framing of the bathroom scenes shows power cords for cameras/lighting equipment. The 'police' station is an obvious conference room and the hospital bed of his grandmother looks to be a card table with a sheet over it. 2) Other than the initial hospital scene with the 'police' telling him that he _shouldn't_ leave, all further scenes involving them and any locations/events involving them add nothing to the story. ...Thanks.
