smashayre I stumbled onto it by way of having seen Kim Ah Jung in something else she was funny in. At any rate when I heard there was going to be a sequel to this my first thought was how? For that matter how could they possibly have kept the Japanese comic that inspired this movie going with a premise that's pretty much a mishmash betwixt Cyrano De Bergerac and Eddie Murphy's remake of The Nutty Professor but without the scifi angle. I'm always amazed at how Japanese comic artists can keep their series going well into the hundreds what would only last 2 seasons here would last well beyond it there just because their writers are so creative with their plot twists and development. There are spoilers in this review so read on if you want to be spoiled. As for the aforementioned comparison to Cyrano De Bergerac? Much like Cyrano, Kang Han na is or at least deems herself hideous and as such decides to stay out of the lime light while she let's someone else take the credit for her singing much like Cyrano De Bergerac allowed the guy who was his rival take credit for the poetry he wrote. In further comparison to Cyrano De Bergerac is how Kang Han na post-surgery sticks up for a voyeur with his camera by stating that she understands exactly how he felt when really it was how she felt. Then there's the whole secret love interest angle that's so obviously Cyrano albeit with the engendered roles switched (Kang Han na's a woman after all not a man).Much like the Nutty Professor she was obsessed over trying to find ways to lose her weight just to get her love interest to love her. First with diet pills then she ultimately turned to science albeit in the form of plastic surgery but not a scifi special serum. That being said there's nary a fart-joke here so you've been warned. But Kim Ah Jung can sing who knew. My favorite is the Beautiful Girl song with Maria being a close second I guess. With that being said once I saw this movie to its end I could definitely see some natural problems pop-up that could feed into the sequel. I mean women get fat after getting pregnant right? I suspect once her bf gets over the whole plastic surgery thing she'll be pregnant with his baby. I also suspect she'd gain the weight back so that she'd be back to 200+ pounds. That being said since she's not necessarily used to the concept of dieting or exercising to lose weight I imagine that would be a struggle in addition to maintaining her newly restarted singing career. Not only that but the impending delivery of the baby and her increased appetite in addition to the contractions and her water breaking. These are natural problems. I don't think he'd leave her because I don't think he's really that shallow. Oh and if they wanted to they could add fart-jokes here too pregnant have gas too but I suspect they won't. The really important thing is that they keep the heart in there in addition to the comedy, the good music, and the overall feel good nature that you get in the end.
blue berries I thought that this film would be nice, considering the fact that the storyline spoke about a "200 pound" beauty.( I wanted to watch it because I myself am obese). The way she suffers hurt because of the way the world perceives her was nicely presented. The film is a indirect satire on the society, which DEMANDS that you look "good" and "presentable" to be "accepted". The way Hanna changes to Jenny, just to "prove her worth" in the eyes of the man, whom she loves so much, is something which we must together change as a society.I'm surprised that this film doesn't figure in the must-watch list of Hollywood critics, who compile the top 100 lists regularly. This is an absolutely MUST WATCH film. The way the director presents the story is what makes it immensely heart touching. The end concert scene made me nearly cry. Wow!! Due credit must be given to the film's heroine Kim Ah-joong who lives her role. She communicates her emotions so clearly through her lovely eyes and face expressions that you end up admiring so much, because she makes you forget that she's acting!!! Kudos to her.The male lead also suits perfectly. Hanna's friend and the recording company boss' son are superb. The scenes between dog-Jenny and Jenny in lift make you laugh a lot. Oh I also cannot forget the love making scenes where she says "not here" and "not there, either"!!! The concert takes the film to amazing heights and makes it a movie-experience you don't wanna miss out. Hats off to the entire team for making such a fine film. You truly rocked my life!!!!
keski The best thing I like about this movie is that it doesn't "try" to pull out your emotions, which happens a lot in romantic comedies that end up being tragic nightmares. It has a simple plot, but has sweet and cute details, and I have to say all the scenes are pretty colorful and sweet, too.I missed the movie in theaters, and was watching it on DVD, found myself grabbing a tissue at the end. Actually, I was interested in the hero of the movie, but was greatly impressed by Ah-Joong Kim's performance. She can act AND sing. I'm not sure if the film will be fully understood reading subtitles, but anyone who watches this movie will need to absorb each and every line that's being said. ==spoiler=== The reference to the Canne-winning film Old Boy gave a comical twist and makes everyone chuckle. ANYbody can sympathize with the heroine, plus the hero is good-looking!
le_renard I will admit that I have not seen many Korean romantic comedies, so I can't say definitively how it compares to others. But I have definitely seen my fair share of U.S. romantic comedies. Frankly, the genre has become so clichéd, it's nearly impossible to find any decent new romantic comedies. When I chose to watch "200 Pounds Beauty," I expected more of the same formulaic plot twists, etc. Yet I was pleasantly surprised at how beautifully produced this movie was. The actors did a superb job. My only contention is that there were several unexplained plot contents. I won't spoil it for any potential viewers, so I'll leave you to figure those out for yourselves.Bottom line: if you want to watch a cute, funny and well done romantic comedy, then this is your movie. But make sure you have some Kleenex on hand! There are a few tugging-at-the-heart strings scenes.
