Biography
Emma Nicholson is a volcanologist whose research focuses on developing innovative technologies for studying volcanoes and their role in shaping the planet. Nicholson is driven by a fascination to learn more about the processes happening deep beneath our feet that drive volcanic eruptions, as well as how these events impact neighboring communities and how to reduce societal and environmental risks. Her research has led her to explore understudied volcanoes in remote parts of the world; from the deep jungles of Papua New Guinea to the wind-swept volcanic islands of the Southern Ocean, where her Society-funded grant is based. In addition to research, she supervises research students and lectures at University College London across several earth sciences programs. She is committed to creating a space where all students can feel empowered to develop their knowledge and find their own pathway within science, exploration, or both.
